I painted this work after walking part of the Hooker Valley Track in Aotearoa New Zealand. I felt a deep connection to the landscapes there, and they continue to be a major source of inspiration for my work.
I have always been drawn to mountainous places that feel very different from home. Being in landscapes like this gives me a sense of distance from everyday life. In New Zealand, I felt a level of freedom that I hadn’t experienced before, and I wanted to hold onto that feeling.
This painting was made as a way of commemorating that experience. The Hooker Valley is one of my favourite places I have ever visited, and working at a large scale allowed me to spend time with the scene and translate what it meant to me into paint. Through this work, I hope to share a sense of space and escape with the viewer, similar to what I felt when I was there.
