After visiting the Humboldt Redwoods near the coast of Northern California, I wanted to capture the warm sunlight hitting the bark and illuminating the high branches, contrasted with the cool tones created where the dense canopy prevents the light from reaching the smaller trees and forest floor.
Being the tallest trees on Earth, there’s something slightly ironic about trying to capture them within a painting only 3.5 inches tall.
